Gialos, commonly known as the old port of Fira in Santorini is located just below the town of Fira, the capital of Santorini. A few decades ago, this was the main commercial port of the island.
The tourist development of Santorini had a result of this port becoming a tourist port and the main commercial port was transferred to the location Athinios, where it is found until today.
Gialos does not receive commercial ferries, however, it works mostly during the summer and serves only the many cruise ships that arrive on the island.
The port can be tiring to get up and down Fira due to its downhill location. This is why the most common way is to take the cable car from the old port up to the town of Fira. For a more traditional way, you could use the stairs which will take aproximately 20 minutes uphill.
